Announcement 3/10/2023:

On March, 3, 2023, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a press release regarding COVID-19 Guidance and reminded Californians that vaccines, testing, and treatment remain available.

In the press release, CDPH summarized changes in the following guidance:

  • Guidance for Face Coverings (ca.gov) - Effective 4/3/2023
  • Guidance on Isolation and Quarantine for COVID-19 (ca.gov) - Effective 3/13/2023
    • Removes recommendation to test in order to leave isolation before Day 10, if the individual is well with no symptoms, or symptoms are mild or improving and are fever free for 24 hours.
    • After ending isolation, persons may remove their mask sooner than Day 10 with two sequential negative tests one day apart.
    • Updates definition of infectious period:
      • For symptomatic confirmed cases, 2 days before the confirmed case had any symptoms (symptom onset date is Day 0) through Days 5-10 after symptoms first appeared AND 24 hours have passed with no fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications, and symptoms have improved, OR
      • For asymptomatic confirmed cases, 2 days before the positive specimen collection date (collection date is Day 0) through Day 5 after positive specimen collection date for their first positive COVID-19 test.
  • In workplaces, employers and employees are subject to either the Cal/OSHA COVID-19 Prevention Non-Emergency Regulations or the Cal/OSHA Aerosol Transmissible Diseases (ATD) PDF Standard and should consult those regulations for additional applicable requirements.

Per this April 12th update, a close contact is now defined as:

  • someone sharing the same indoor airspace of 400,000 or fewer cubic feet per floor (home, clinic waiting room, airplane etc.) for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period during an infected person's (laboratory-confirmed or a clinical diagnosis) infectious period -OR-
  • Within a large indoor space greater than 400,000 cubic feet (warehouses, large retail stores, food processing facilities), as being within 6 feet of the infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period during a confirmed case's infectious period.

It is crucial that individuals who are positive, test negative on Day 5 to be release from isolation after Day 5 AND satisfy other criteria outlined in the guidance. If an individual is unable to obtain a COVID-19 test or do not test negative on Day 5, per CDPH, they must isolate for the full 10 days of isolation (in effect until March 12, 2023).
