2019-2020 SURVEY SHOWS A DECLINE IN TOBACCO USAGE WITH VAPING BEING THE MOST USED PRODUCT
County-wide surveys students to determine tobacco trends
The California Student Tobacco Survey conducted from 2019-2020 shows that around 32.1% of students in Sutter, Glenn, Colusa, and Yuba County have or currently use tobacco products. These findings are part of research released on student use of, knowledge of, and attitudes toward tobacco products, including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and marijuana.
Around 2,930 students from high schools in the region were surveyed as part of a public health campaign to address the current youth e-cigarette epidemic.
The survey found the following:
- Among Sutter County students who had never used tobacco, over one-third were susceptible to future use.
- 11.1% of the region's high school students use vaping products, and only 1.5% use cigarettes
- Students with poor mental health had higher usage rates, making up 39.2% of tobacco users
- 96.2% of students who vape use flavors
- 75.8% of students believe vaping companies are part of the tobacco industry
- 74% of students agree that tobacco companies target people their age by advertising flavored tobacco products
The popularity of e-cigarettes among youth in Sutter County continues to be a matter of concern. Current e-cigarette use among middle and high school students in Sutter County is 6.6%, which accounts for the majority of all youth tobacco use (9.3%). While youth use of traditional cigarettes has decreased, the majority of youth that currently use do so because of their access and addiction to e-cigarettes.

TOBACCO REPORT FINDS SUTTER COUNTY FAILING IN EFFORTS TO REDUCE TOBACCO-CAUSED DEATH AND DISEASE.
The State of Tobacco Control report released January 2022 by the American Lung Association says California remains one of the top states in the U.S., in terms of curbing tobacco use. Unfortunately, Sutter County is not one of the top performing counties in California. Overall Sutter County received a failing grade.
The grading system awards points in four areas: smoke free outdoor air, smoke free housing, reducing sales of tobacco products and a “bonus points” section for emerging issues (such as restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products).
The American Lung Association calls for the following actions to be taken by elected officials to reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke:
- Prohibit the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol;
- Expand protection from secondhand smoke exposure in locations including multi-unit housing; and outdoor dining; and
- Pass policies to further reduce access to tobacco products.
These policies recommended by the American Lung Association will improve the health of our community and ensure that tobacco is kept out of the hands of children.
